Metabolic Health

Metabolic health issues are on the rise in North America. Metabolic health refers to blood glucose levels, triglycerides, cholesterol levels and waist circumference. Poor metabolic health can increase the risks of:

  • Metabolic syndrome (high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high sugar)
  • Pre-diabetes and type II diabetes
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD & NASH)
  • Heart disease
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Hormonal imbalances

A study published in 2014 showed that nearly 1 in 5 Canadians meet the diagnostic criteria for metabolic syndrome. Additionally, nearly 1 in 3 Canadians currently have diabetes* or pre-diabetes. These conditions are on the rise, and place a significant burden on both the individual and our healthcare system.

The functional medicine approach to addressing metabolic syndrome involves a thorough assessment for risk factors, optimizing diet, modifying lifestyle factors, discussing support systems and devising a plan that is tailored to the individual.
